3D Printing (FDM)

A nozzle lays molten plastic down one layer at a time, building the part from the bottom up.

A cutting tool removes material from a solid block until the part is what is left.

Resin Printing (SLA/DLP)

A light source cures liquid resin layer by layer, so the finished part comes out of a vat rather than off a nozzle.

Powder Bed (SLS/MJF)

A laser or a print head fuses powder in a heated bed, and the unfused powder holds the part up while it builds.

Laser Cutting

A focused laser burns through flat stock along your outline, cutting the part out of a sheet.

Waterjet Cutting

A jet of water and abrasive cuts through the sheet cold, so nothing near the edge is heated.

A blade follows your outline through thin, soft material — vinyl, card, foam, gasket rubber.

Wire EDM

A charged wire erodes a path through conductive metal by spark, touching nothing and pushing on nothing.

Not sure which one you need?

Start from the part. If it is flat and cut from sheet, you want one of the four cutting processes — laser for speed on thin stock, waterjet when it is thick or must not be heated, wire EDM for hardened metal, a drag knife for vinyl and other soft goods. If it is solid and has to hold a tolerance, that is machining. If it is a plastic part you need quickly, that is printing.
